GMAACC’s Timeline

2014 - Malden Asian American Community Coalition is founded by a group of AAPI Malden residents, leaders, and community organizers.

2015 - MAACC’s Youth Leadership Program is convened and conducts a needs assessment of the AAPI community.

2016 - GMAACC is officially formed as a nonprofit organization

2019 - Upon learning about the challenges senior Limited English Proficient voters in Malden face due to inadequate language access, GMAACC joins a coalition of organizations that includes Asian Community Development Corporation, Greater Boston Legal Services (Asian Outreach Center) and Chinese Progressive Association Boston,  and begins advocacy for language justice at the polls in the City of Malden.

May 2020 - During the COVID-19 pandemic, in response to the surge in anti-Asian racism fueled by national xenophobic and anti-China rhetoric, GMAACC youth organize a virtual town hall with over 200 attendees to rally support for local Asian American communities. As a result of the town hall, GMAACC secures commitment from the City of Malden to hold regular meetings to address community issues collaboratively.

2020 -

GMAACC, partnering with Malden Neighbors Helping Neighbors and local AAPI-owned restaurants, starts a Warm Meals Program.

GMAACC works with MA Department of Public Health, Malden Neighbors Helping Neighbors, and other community partners to work on vaccine outreach.

Youth leaders reimagine the youth leadership program as Youth Organizing Group (YOG).

Youth Program for Asian Wellness (YPAW) is established under Dr. Jenny Hsi’s guidance.

June 2021 - GMAACC partners with First Parish Church in Malden to establish the Ping Pong Club.

December 2022 - After more than two years of advocacy, community members, Malden-based organizations, elected leaders, and GMAACC gather to celebrate the passage of the Malden transliteration bill, which grants Chinese voters full access to the ballots.

December 2022 - In partnership with Wah Lum Kung Fu & Tai Chi Academy, Hua Xia Multi Arts Group officially becomes a GMAACC program, offering community members a space to practice and host cultural arts performances, including dancing and singing.

2024 - GMAACC is awarded a federal appropriation by Congresswoman Clark’s Office for the purchase and development of an Asian American Cultural and Community Center in Malden.
